Sage – The guardian of wisdom and the sacred women's herb

Salbei – Die Wächterin der Weisheit und das heilige Frauenkraut

There are plants that flatter, and there are plants that lead. Sage ( Salvia officinalis ) belongs to the latter category. With its velvety, silvery-grey leaves and its tart, clarifying fragrance, it stands like a rock in the surf of the wild herb world.

Its name says it all: it derives from the Latin word salvare – “to heal” or “to save”. On the barren soils of Fartàritx, it develops an intensity that you feel immediately when you rub a leaf between your fingers. It stands for clarity, protection, and ancient wisdom.

The wise companion of the woman

In naturopathy, sage is often referred to as the great "women's herb", especially during periods of change in life.

  • During menopause: When the body's thermostat goes haywire, sage is the first choice. It acts like a gentle internal air conditioner. Its ingredients regulate perspiration and can noticeably alleviate hot flashes.
  • Hormonal balance: Sage contains plant estrogens (phytoestrogens). It supports the body in gently replenishing hormonal dips – whether due to irregular cycles or the typical "PMS blues".
  • Relief from cramps: In cases of menstrual cramps, its warmth has a relaxing effect on the lower abdomen and helps to flush out water retention.
  • The Guardian of the Throat

But sage isn't just for hormonal balance; it's also a powerful protector against external threats. Its essential oils (thujone, cineole) and tannins have strong antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties . When your throat is scratchy or your voice is hoarse, sage acts as an astringent and disinfectant. It's considered nature's best gargle and strengthens the oral cavity.

A ritual of purification

The history of sage is mystical.

  • Ancient times: "Why should a person die in whose garden sage grows?" – this old Latin proverb shows how highly it was valued. Egyptians and Romans saw it as an elixir of life for mind and body.
  • Smudging & Protection: Not only the white sage of America, but also our native sage has been used for smudging since the Middle Ages. Its smoke is considered highly purifying. It is used to clear rooms of "stuffy air," dispel negative energies, and create mental clarity. It is the scent of new beginnings.
  • Sage on Fartàritx

Our wild sage has to contend with the heat and wind of the Tramuntana mountains. This makes it more concentrated and resilient than any garden plant. In our products, we harness this concentrated "survival power" to protect and strengthen you.
