One breath is all it takes, and you're in the south. The resinous, clear scent of rosemary is the olfactory soundtrack of the Tramuntana mountains. But behind this familiar culinary herb lies one of the most potent medicinal plants in the Mediterranean.
Its Latin name , Rosmarinus officinalis, sounds like a poem: "dew of the sea." And indeed, it thrives best where it can hear the sound of the waves. On Fartàritx, in the rugged heights of the mountains, however, it develops a special intensity. To survive here, it concentrates its essential oils into a potency far exceeding anything found in greenhouses.
A herb of remembrance and loyalty
Since antiquity, rosemary has been considered a plant for the mind. Greek scholars wore rosemary wreaths to strengthen their memory during exams – an effect that modern science now explains by improved blood flow to the brain. For the Romans, it was a symbol of fidelity and love, indispensable at weddings. In the Middle Ages, it transformed into a protective shield: it was used to fumigate houses and hospital wards to purify the air and drive away "evil spirits" (or bacteria).
Rooted in the soul of Mallorca
On our island, rosemary is sacred. In Mallorcan culture, it is inextricably linked to the festival of Sant Antoni , the patron saint of animals. During the major January celebrations, rosemary sprigs are blessed and given to pets and livestock to protect them from illness and misfortune.
He also plays a central role in the "Rondallas Mallorquinas," the island's old folktales. The story of "La Flor Romanial" tells of the miraculous healing power of a rare rosemary blossom, capable of healing even the most grievous wounds. For us, this is more than a folktale—it is a testament to the ancient knowledge slumbering in these mountains.
Ignite the fire within the body
In its application, rosemary acts like a spark. It is a "morning herb" that gets things moving.
- Focus & Clarity: When your head is heavy and your concentration is waning, the scent of rosemary acts like a clear breeze. It boosts cognitive performance and awakens the mind.
- Warmth & Circulation: Rosemary warms you up. It is traditionally used to gently raise low blood pressure and warm cold hands or feet.
- Digestion & Detoxification: Its bitter substances support the liver and gallbladder. A tea or extract after meals helps to avoid bloating and harmonize digestion.
- Protective shield: Its powerful antioxidants (such as rosmarinic acid) help the body defend itself against free radicals and have an anti-inflammatory effect – ideal for joints and muscles.
The wild power of the rocks
For our elixirs and hydrosols, we use only plants that have grown in their natural rhythm. Our rosemary is not fertilized; it is nourished by the sun and the rocks. You can feel it in every drop: it is pure, concentrated life energy.
