When the sun beats down mercilessly on the Tramuntana mountains in the height of summer, and other plants retreat, there it stands: green, strong, and unwavering. The mastic tree ( Pistacia lentiscus ), also known as the mastic shrub, is the survivor of the Mediterranean.
In the Balearic Islands, it's more than just a bush – it's a symbol of character. It represents resilience and adaptability. It teaches us that even under harsh conditions, one can not only survive but thrive.
The Tears of the Gods: A Myth
Its history is as old as civilization itself. In Greek mythology, it is said that the mastic tree sprang from the tears of the goddess Chios, who wept in grief over the death of her lover. We can still find these "tears" today: they are the precious resin (mastic) that the shrub secretes. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, already used this resin. In ancient Greece, the plant was so sacred that it was considered a symbol of hospitality.
The guardian of the stomach
In traditional folk medicine, the Mata is the first thing to reach for when the stomach rebels.
- Digestive aid: Its leaves and resin have a calming effect on the gastrointestinal tract. They relieve bloating and a feeling of fullness, gently restoring the digestive system to its normal rhythm.
- Mouth & Protection: The antimicrobial properties of Mata resin are legendary. In the past, the resin was chewed for dental care (an ancient form of chewing gum) to strengthen the gums and inhibit inflammation in the oral cavity.
Clarifying for the skin
What cleanses internally also works externally. Extracts of the Mata plant are experiencing a renaissance in modern natural cosmetics.
- Refinement: It has an astringent (tightening) effect. This means it helps to visually minimize large pores and tighten the skin.
- Soothing: Its anti-inflammatory substances act like a gentle balm on skin blemishes or redness. It relieves stress on the skin.
Help with inflammation
The ancient Mallorcans used poultices made from Mata to alleviate rheumatic ailments. The plant contains powerful antioxidants that help to reduce inflammatory processes in the body – whether in the joints or on the skin.
A jewel of the wilderness
On Fartàritx, the Mata grows wild among the rocks. We harvest it with respect for its resilience. When you smell its tart, resinous scent, you connect directly with the wild soul of Mallorca. It reminds us: Stay strong, stay rooted, no matter how stormy it gets.
